Service and Justice

This commission maintains and motivates committees and ministries; develops new programs and committees targeted at specific needs; sets goals and evaluates progress in the area of service to others within and beyond and our STM community.

Area Ecumenical Network

Twenty-seven churches are part of the AEN. As Christians, we demonstrate that we are one body in Christ-diversified, yet united; coming together to discover, understand, and appreciate one another’s traditions; to profess our common faith; to share parish information, programs, and other resources; to develop programs in common in response to needs; and to network with and assist community programs that are responding to human needs. With members of interfaith communities, we will work together on programs and projects of mutual interest and common concern. Everyone is welcome to attend AEN meetings.

Bread for the World

STM is a Covenant Church for BFW—we support BFW with money and by lobbying legislators for hungry people in our nation and the world. Yearly, there is an "Offering of Letters" for a specific hunger project. Other volunteers help organize the event. A bread sale is held each year to support this Ministry.

Christ Child Society

A group of Catholic women who aid needy children and some confined adults. Volunteer activities are: play bingo and provide prizes and refreshments to children confined at the County Home, supply layettes to needy mothers for their newborns, provide "welcome bags" of clothes, toys and personal care items to children who accompany their mothers to answer phones for the Salvation Army’s "Adopt A Family" Christmas program. Volunteers also needed to knit or crochet items.

Community Clothes Closet

A non-profit organization dedicated to provide clothing and household items to low income individuals throughout the Fox Valley at no cost to the clients. Only clients who are referred by one of the approved referral agencies, churches or other non-profit organizations are allowed to shop in the store. Volunteers to sort clothes and assist clients are needed as well as financial contributions, clothes and household items.

Crop Walk

A walk for the hungry in the Fox Valley. 25% of funds stay in the Fox Valley with the remainder sent to Church World Services. Everyone (especially families) are encouraged to walk one, six or ten miles. Other volunteers help organize the event.

Distribute Holy Communion to the sick at area hospital.

Distribute Communion to Franciscan Care Center

Elizabeth Ministry

This ministry is based on the scripture stories of the visitation of Mary and Elizabeth, two women who are pregnant in difficult situation. Women volunteers reach out to expectant mothers, new mothers, mothers experiencing infertility, adoption, miscarriage, or infant loss. Elizabeth Ministers are not considered counselors or experts. They are simply women willing to share their presence, stories, and experiences in the hope that they can support, encourage, console and at times bring healing to other women. Other volunteers craft gift items.

Harbor House

A domestic abuse shelter for women and their children. STM supports Harbor House with semi-annual donation drives during the CSC weekend and the Parish Lenten Drive.

Hospital Visitors (Appleton Medical Center)

Ask patients if they would like to receive Communion and visit with them.

LEAVEN

STM supports LEAVEN through volunteers and donations. LEAVEN is an emergency assistance program that helps people in crisis who have basic needs that cannot be met elsewhere. This agency networks with churches and other agencies to avoid duplication of service and meets a variety of needs such as rent, security deposit, mortgage payments, utilities, prescriptions, diapers, transportation, etc.

Literacy

Pioneer Village

A veteran’s retirement home where volunteers cook and serve meals.

Refugee Outreach

Serve as contact with Hmong families previously sponsored by STM, and other Hmong families in need. Help with emergency needs not covered by other agencies, assist with information they may need and also help them understand any information they receive. Assist with income taxes, applying for housing, housing problems, etc.

Respect Life Committee

This committee welcomes those who cherish the gift of life and are committed to educating attitudes and actions that promote life from conception to the grave. Members may choose to attend meetings and/or volunteer to assist with one or more projects during a year. Projects include: collection of needed items for Fox Valley Mother and unborn Baby Care, provide educational materials for parishioners, publicize local Respect Life activities, encourage participation about legislation concerning human life issues, and a flower sale to celebrate Mother’s Day.

Salvation Army Sunday Noon Meal Program

There are approximately 32 teams of 8-10 people from 16 area churches that participate in this program. Each team is assigned a Sunday to prepare a noon meal at Salvation Army for approximately 80-100 needy people. The food is supplied and meals planned by the Salvation Army --work involves heating and serving food, along with clean up.
